You'll be able to party on with these 8 excellent tips for hosting a fantastic trivia night!
Trivia nights are a super popular event at bars, restaurants, and pubs all over the world. One night in the 1970s, a pub owner in the UK decided to hold a pub quiz, and the trivia scene was born! Now, anyone with a mic and a venue can host a show, but if you want to host a really spectacular show you need to figure out these 8 key ingredients. 
Wherever I Hang My Hat Is Home...the Venue. Having a good venue for the show is crucial! You want a place that is big enough to accommodate a reasonable amount of teams, but you don’t want it so big that those in the back don’t feel like part of the show. You need to have ample seating with plenty of room for teammates to huddle and confer over answers, but those venue servers still have enough space to squeeze in between tables and deliver the food and drinks. To Theme or Not To Theme, That is the Question. Having a themed trivia night could go either way, right? People can be a bit rabid about attending events themed for their particular fandom, but at the same time, you risk alienating those trivia players that aren’t interested in whatever theme you have chosen for the evening. You can lessen the gamble by seeing what themes have worked for people in the past, polling theme ideas on social media, pre-selling tickets on Eventbrite to gauge interest, and match a theme to a venue (a sport bar would probably do well with a sports trivia night for example.) 
From The Window to the Wall...Getting People in the Door. Your trivia night will be a total flop if no one knows it even exists. Make sure you get the word out that your event is taking place so you can have a successful show. Harness the power of social media, invite all of your friends and family, have the venue do a few shout outs, create Eventbrite events, post flyers around town etc etc etc. Try to utilize as many marketing tactics as you can think of to spread the word about your show. Keep it Simple, Stupid! The Rules That Is. Try to keep the rules of your game as simple and straightforward as possible. Also, make sure that you fully explain them to the teams before beginning the show. You may want to decide on your strategy for handling disputes or errors beforehand, so that you can remain cool and confident if a team challenges your decision. 
This Dog Walks Into a Bar...Be Entertaining. Know your rules, your trivia material, how to run your equipment, and how to score your teams inside and out before your show, that way you can focus on being an engaging and entertaining host while the show is on. People will likely get bored if you are constantly having technical difficulties or have extended pauses while you are tallying scores. Keep it light and funny, and your teams will be back again and again. May the Best Team Win...Inspire a Little Friendly Competition. Keep the teams updated on their scores throughout the games to spur the competitive side of your players. Teams will try that much harder if they know exactly how many points they are from winning. Friendly competition is a good thing, but also make sure that your lower scoring teams feel encouraged! 
Swag! Prize Time! Many venues will provide gift certificates or free promotional items to be used as prizes for your winning teams. If they do not, pick up a few odds and ends at the dollar store or Target. People like to win things, even if they are just little bits of silly nonsense. If all else fails, buy your winning team a round of beers! Errybody in the Club Get Tipsy! Speaking of beers, alcohol is never amiss at any event! A little liquid fortification can up the competition and participation levels of your teams. That isn’t to say that venues without alcohol can’t run a successful show...we’re just saying everyone seems funnier when their crowd has had a beer or two... There you have it, folks! For those who have never played music bingo before, let me give you a quick rundown on how the game is played. Players are given bingo cards, but unlike traditional bingo cards that contain nothing but numbers, the squares on music bingo cards are filled with song titles or the names of music artists. The music bingo host plays a couple minutes of a song, and the players have to match the song played with one of the squares on their cards. Does it sound like fun? It is, trust us. Many bars or pubs host a trivia night, but that isn't the only venue that can rock a show.
Trivia night is a great way for bars and restaurants to bring in extra money, but running a pub isn't the only reason to host a trivia show. Think outside of the trivia box!
Hosting a trivia night is an excellent way for bars or pubs to bring in extra money on a slower night of the week. A game generally lasts around 2 hours which is 2 extra hours of having people sit around ordering drinks in an establishment, it’s a pretty safe bet that the entertainment will lead to profits. However, bars aren’t the only places that a trivia show can be a big win. There are many venues and events that could use the fun and entertainment that a trivia show can bring! While this list isn’t exhaustive, it is a great introduction as to ways a trivia night could be used in places other than the local pub. 
School Fundraisers Raising money for school children is a noble cause to be sure, but it can be tricky to actually find a fundraiser that people are interested in supporting. The little catalogs full of overpriced junk is a hard sell, and the average bake sale doesn't bring in all that much cash. So, what is a school to do? Host a trivia night, of course! Local businesses will likely donate a few items that can be given away as prizes, and for a small cover charge, parents can have a fun game show trivia night! It is a win for everyone. Family Reunions Family reunions are often large events with a lot of people that don’t always have that much in common, well, besides being related, and after all the eating is finished it can often be hard to find acceptable entertainment for all the various age groups. That is why having a trivia night makes for the perfect plan! General knowledge trivia is perfect for the mixed age groups, and playing against family members always brings out the competitive streak in people. Just remember to keep it civil or next year’s reunion could be a bit awkward. 
Meetup Groups Meetup groups are an excellent way to get out and meet new people, make new friends with similar interests. A lot of them are very topic specific, and may even be groups that belong to a specific fandom. Hosting a themed trivia night at a local restaurant or meeting hall makes for a great meetup event! People will need to form teams and collaborate on the answers which is an excellent way to socialize without the pressure of coming up with conversation topics all on your own. Dorm or First Day of School Mixers Starting a new year in a new class or in a new dorm can be a bit nerve-wracking. Teachers and RAs are often looking for games to break the ice or get people mingling, and an interactive trivia game is the perfect solution! Students will find themselves conversing with their peers in no time. 
Corporate Team Building Events There is no need to go on some fancy retreat and practice your trust falls when you can bring the team building to your conference room! You can build your trivia teams from the different departments or mix everyone up and get them out of their comfort zone, either way, an afternoon playing game show trivia is more fun and more cost effective. Holiday Parties Hosting a big holiday function but don’t know what to do for entertainment? Trivia games can be themed to the celebratory holiday to fill your entertaining void. Games can run smoothly with just two or three teams, so even if it is a fairly small party, the game can still go on! 
Senior Centers Many assisted living facilities and senior centers run successful bingo nights, but why not try a trivia night as well? The game can be tailored to the age group of the players for a fun night! Charity Events Just like the school fundraisers, charity events can harness the power of trivia to help them raise some cash.
