Start a Trivia Night in Vancouver

Vancouver talks about the weather because the weather is always doing something worth talking about. From November on, rain comes in off the Pacific in soft grey sheets, beading on cedar boughs and glass towers alike, then lifts all at once to show the North Shore mountains standing close enough to touch, snow on their shoulders above a green, dripping city.

People here gather by water. On the seawall at English Bay for the sunset, on Commercial Drive when the café chairs spill onto the sidewalk, in line for the SeaBus with a paper cup and a damp umbrella. Summer is long light and beaches; the rest of the year the city comes indoors, and a trivia night becomes the reason to cross a bridge on a Tuesday, pull on a hoodie still wet from the walk, and argue with friends about a Canucks trade from twenty years ago.

That habit is worth protecting. The rooms along Main Street and the Drive, the comedy nights in back rooms, the bands loading gear in the rain, the quizmaster with a clipboard and a terrible pun: they last only if people show up on a weeknight. The mountains will be there on Saturday. The Tuesday room might not be, unless people fill it.
