If you are new to trivia hosting or music bingo hosting, you may be wondering about the technical aspects of things. Well, Fat City is here to help! In our first video, we showed you how to print quality music bingo cards at home, and now, we want to show you how to set up all that sound equipment. It can seem a lot trickier than it is, but this video tutorial will have you looking like a pro in no time.
There is a lot of equipment that goes into making a Fat City host's toolkit, and although some of it is based on personal preference, most of the items mentioned in this video are what a host needs to run a show with good sound quality.
Here's a list of all the equipment Dustin mentions in the video:

Trivia hosts! We got what you need...
You'll be able to party on with these 8 excellent tips for hosting a fantastic trivia night!
Trivia nights are a super popular event at bars, restaurants, and pubs all over the world. One night in the 1970s, a pub owner in the UK decided to hold a pub quiz, and the trivia scene was born! Now, anyone with a mic and a venue can host a show, but if you want to host a really spectacular show you need to figure out these 8 key ingredients.
Wherever I Hang My Hat Is Home...the Venue.
Having a good venue for the show is crucial! You want a place that is big enough to accommodate a reasonable amount of teams, but you don’t want it so big that those in the back don’t feel like part of the show. You need to have ample seating with plenty of room for teammates to huddle and confer over answers, but those venue servers still have enough space to squeeze in between tables and deliver the food and drinks.
To Theme or Not To Theme, That is the Question.
Having a themed trivia night could go either way, right? People can be a bit rabid about attending events themed for their particular fandom, but at the same time, you risk alienating those trivia players that aren’t interested in whatever theme you have chosen for the evening. You can lessen the gamble by seeing what themes have worked for people in the past, polling theme ideas on social media, pre-selling tickets on Eventbrite to gauge interest, and match a theme to a venue (a sport bar would probably do well with a sports trivia night for example.)
From The Window to the Wall...Getting People in the Door.
Your trivia night will be a total flop if no one knows it even exists. Make sure you get the word out that your event is taking place so you can have a successful show. Harness the power of social media, invite all of your friends and family, have the venue do a few shout outs, create Eventbrite events, post flyers around town etc etc etc. Try to utilize as many marketing tactics as you can think of to spread the word about your show.
Keep it Simple, Stupid! The Rules That Is.
Try to keep the rules of your game as simple and straightforward as possible. Also, make sure that you fully explain them to the teams before beginning the show. You may want to decide on your strategy for handling disputes or errors beforehand, so that you can remain cool and confident if a team challenges your decision.
This Dog Walks Into a Bar...Be Entertaining.
Know your rules, your trivia material, how to run your equipment, and how to score your teams inside and out before your show, that way you can focus on being an engaging and entertaining host while the show is on. People will likely get bored if you are constantly having technical difficulties or have extended pauses while you are tallying scores. Keep it light and funny, and your teams will be back again and again.
May the Best Team Win...Inspire a Little Friendly Competition.
Keep the teams updated on their scores throughout the games to spur the competitive side of your players. Teams will try that much harder if they know exactly how many points they are from winning. Friendly competition is a good thing, but also make sure that your lower scoring teams feel encouraged!
Swag! Prize Time!
Many venues will provide gift certificates or free promotional items to be used as prizes for your winning teams. If they do not, pick up a few odds and ends at the dollar store or Target. People like to win things, even if they are just little bits of silly nonsense. If all else fails, buy your winning team a round of beers!
Errybody in the Club Get Tipsy!
Speaking of beers, alcohol is never amiss at any event! A little liquid fortification can up the competition and participation levels of your teams. That isn’t to say that venues without alcohol can’t run a successful show...we’re just saying everyone seems funnier when their crowd has had a beer or two...
There you have it, folks! Eight tips and tricks to have you hosting a stellar trivia night in no time flat!

Many bars or pubs host a trivia night, but that isn't the only venue that can rock a show.
Trivia night is a great way for bars and restaurants to bring in extra money, but running a pub isn't the only reason to host a trivia show. Think outside of the trivia box!
Hosting a trivia night is an excellent way for bars or pubs to bring in extra money on a slower night of the week. A game generally lasts around 2 hours which is 2 extra hours of having people sit around ordering drinks in an establishment, it’s a pretty safe bet that the entertainment will lead to profits.
However, bars aren’t the only places that a trivia show can be a big win. There are many venues and events that could use the fun and entertainment that a trivia show can bring! While this list isn’t exhaustive, it is a great introduction as to ways a trivia night could be used in places other than the local pub.
Raising money for school children is a noble cause to be sure, but it can be tricky to actually find a fundraiser that people are interested in supporting. The little catalogs full of overpriced junk is a hard sell, and the average bake sale doesn't bring in all that much cash. So, what is a school to do? Host a trivia night, of course! Local businesses will likely donate a few items that can be given away as prizes, and for a small cover charge, parents can have a fun game show trivia night! It is a win for everyone.
Family reunions are often large events with a lot of people that don’t always have that much in common, well, besides being related, and after all the eating is finished it can often be hard to find acceptable entertainment for all the various age groups. That is why having a trivia night makes for the perfect plan! General knowledge trivia is perfect for the mixed age groups, and playing against family members always brings out the competitive streak in people. Just remember to keep it civil or next year’s reunion could be a bit awkward.
Meetup groups are an excellent way to get out and meet new people, make new friends with similar interests. A lot of them are very topic specific, and may even be groups that belong to a specific fandom. Hosting a themed trivia night at a local restaurant or meeting hall makes for a great meetup event! People will need to form teams and collaborate on the answers which is an excellent way to socialize without the pressure of coming up with conversation topics all on your own.
Dorm or First Day of School Mixers
Starting a new year in a new class or in a new dorm can be a bit nerve-wracking. Teachers and RAs are often looking for games to break the ice or get people mingling, and an interactive trivia game is the perfect solution! Students will find themselves conversing with their peers in no time.
Corporate Team Building Events
There is no need to go on some fancy retreat and practice your trust falls when you can bring the team building to your conference room! You can build your trivia teams from the different departments or mix everyone up and get them out of their comfort zone, either way, an afternoon playing game show trivia is more fun and more cost effective.
Hosting a big holiday function but don’t know what to do for entertainment? Trivia games can be themed to the celebratory holiday to fill your entertaining void. Games can run smoothly with just two or three teams, so even if it is a fairly small party, the game can still go on!
Many assisted living facilities and senior centers run successful bingo nights, but why not try a trivia night as well? The game can be tailored to the age group of the players for a fun night!
Just like the school fundraisers, charity events can harness the power of trivia to help them raise some cash. Trivia can be for a fancy black tie event too!
Trivia doesn’t have to be just for the evening. Grab your Bloody Mary and form your team for brunch trivia! Everything goes well with a biscuit, even trivia questions.
It can be tough to find games that are age appropriate and still a lot of fun, but trivia is so east to customize, it is always a hit. Interactive games with light-up buzzers and a playlist full of popular artists will have all the kids begging for the next trivia night.
See? Hosting a trivia night is perfect for just about any occasion, and with the downloadable games in the Fat City trivia store, anyone can set up a show. Release your inner trivia host and organize your show today.

What makes a good trivia host? Well, that can be a bit of a subjective answer as personal tastes come in to play a bit. Now obviously, a good host is one that knows the game material, is prepared with correct pronunciations and explanations for the questions and answers, is able to enunciate clearly, and has a passion for hosting and trivia. But the thing that turns a good host into a great host is adding that touch of personality, that little bit of flair.
A great trivia or music bingo host understands how to inject his or her personality into the show to keep the crowd entertained! Sure, the Fat City Entertainment trivia store can provide hosts with all the tools and resources needed to put on a quality show, but what we can’t provide is that little something that makes the show unique. As a great host, you have to learn how to put your own twist on the material and bring the “you” factor that will create loyal players.
For example, we have an awesome monthly game show style trivia show at Bold Missy Brewery in Charlotte that is hosted by a local celebrity and drag queen Lana Cane! It is the perfect bit of flair for the Bold Missy regulars, and Lana really brings her personality to put on a quality show. Now, that doesn’t mean that you should do all your shows in drag (unless you are already an amazing drag queen, then by all means you do you!) It just means, that you gotta find your niche or your hosting personality.
Do something easy like giving yourself a stage name or wearing a signature outfit. You can easily be known as the host that wears the purple pants or that rocks a funky hat.
You could bring a bag of candies to toss out to your crowd when they get a question correctly! Celebrate their victory with a peppermint or make them feel a little better about being incorrect by tossing them a piece of chocolate. Easy bit of added flair.
Are you an amazing baker? Then be the host that bakes a tray of muffins for the winner! Can you sing like an opera diva? Serenade your trivia crowd with an aria! Be the only singing trivia host in town. Are you amazing with accents? Let your trivia players suggest an accent, then do the whole show as a southern belle or a Scottish highlander! Are you wicked funny? Inject a little stand-up routine in between your rounds.
It doesn’t really matter what your thing is. You can use whatever makes you unique to your advantage, and change your hosting gig from good to great! You will find that you build your crowd of regulars that much faster when you go from just reading the questions to actually hosting the show.
Have you always wanted to host your own game show? Did your childhood idols include Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak? Do you have aspirations to be the M.C.?
Then you are in the right place! Fat City Entertainment is ready to make your hosting dreams come true. Follow these five steps, and you will be holding the mic and entertaining the crowd in no time! Ready to get started?
Find Your Game
The first step to hosting your very own show is finding your game. What are your interests? Are you full of useless trivia or an absolute music lover? Decide what kind of show you want to helm, and equally important, what kind of show you think you can sell! While some games may be a lot of fun for you and really pique your interest, if no one else is playing, then you will just be standing in front of an empty room.
Once you figure out your genre, you could create your own game from scratch, but that definitely takes a lot of time and effort. Luckily, we have an entire trivia store full of games ready and waiting for a good host! There is general knowledge trivia, sports themed games, and even some awesome music bingo cards with premade playlists! Plus, we are constantly adding new products and seasons, so you will never run out of content!
Get Your Gear
Now that you've got your game picked out, you need to set up your equipment so that you can run your shows. If you are going with one of our Fat Bottom Trivia games, at the very least you will need a laptop that can run Powerpoint. However, to really put on a top-notch show, you are going to want a microphone, a speaker, and a secondary screen for projecting the game categories.
Not ready to get that technical? Try for something easier like Music Bingo where you can get by with just your phone, a good speaker, and a mic.
Grab Some Props
The key to a quality show is the details. There are a lot of places and companies that do trivia, bingo, or other pub games, but people will remember your show if it has that little something extra!
For example, all of our Fat Bottom Trivia shows are played with buzzers. These colorful light-up buzzers add just the right amount of flair to the show, and our audiences love to buzz in for the win. It is a simple and fairly inexpensive way to make your show more dynamic and make it stand out from the crowd.
Prizes are always a crowd-pleaser as well! If you are planning to host a public show at a bar or restaurant, see if you can work out a prize or two for the winners. It is a lot easier to motivate people to join a team or grab a bingo card if you are offering even just a small prize!
Perfect Your Delivery
Before you can host your show, you have to get familiar with your materials. Read through the trivia questions and answers, look up any words you don't know how to pronounce. Develop a few side games or some interactive material to get the crowd engaged. (hint: people like music! Each of our games comes with a corresponding Spotify playlist, but if you are creating your own game, make sure to think about the music!)
You should also think about your delivery. What kind of host do you want to be? Are you going to tell jokes, be snarky or sarcastic, or be a polished and proper presenter? Your host "personality" should fit the game, the venue, and your comfort level. Having a consistent approach will make your hosting look more professional and gain you those loyal fans.
Try to get in a few good practice rounds with friends or family. Have them give you an honest opinion on things like your articulation, the quality of the material, and whether your jokes are funny or flat. Remember that you will likely be your own worst critic, so try not to be too hard on yourself.
Pitch Your Show
Now that you've got your gear and your props, you've learned your material, and practiced on your friends, it is time to book your first gig. This is where things really get exciting, and it doesn't have to be all that difficult! Sure, you can make yourself a website and spend time and money placing ads on social media, but you can also just walk into your favorite pub or cafe and pitch your show! Trivia shows or music bingo nights are a great way for local businesses to get people in the door on slower nights of the week.
You may want to bring in a buzzer or tell a couple of your jokes, something to let the bar or restaurant know what kind of show you are offering. It is probable that your first couple shows may not make you any money, but everyone needs a little experience when they are just getting started.
We have an excellent e-guide in our Trivia Store for the aspiring trivia or game night host. This inexpensive resource has an entire section on booking gigs as well as a ton of information on putting on a quality show.
There you have it! Five easy steps to becoming a game show host! You are now armed with all you need to be hosting your very own show and living out your dreams.
Have a question about one of these steps or even something that isn't listed here? Drop us a line! We love to help aspiring hosts any way that we can.
If you are a trivia host, than you already know a lot of tricks for keeping your audience entertained and engaged. However, if you are looking for that little something extra, something to really add a dynamic aspect to your show, then let me introduce you to light-up buzzers!
At Fat Bottom Trivia shows, we like to use buzzers that both light-up and make a fun sound when pressed. It adds an extra element of fun to the show, and it keeps people excited to play week after week.
There are a lot of options when it comes to buzzers, some are even Bluetooth enabled, but we like to use a sturdy plastic set that runs on AA batteries. Durability is important because the people handling your buzzers may not be all that careful, especially after a drink or two! And you don't want to keep replacing broken buzzers!
Check out our trivia store where you can purchase a few buzzers of your own, a set of four buzzers that light up in blue, yellow, green, and red. These are the exact ones we use in our shows. The four-pack is currently on sale, don't miss out!
Need a trivia host? Book a show with Fat Bottom Trivia, and the host brings the buzzers! Our shows are perfect for your next big event, a weekly trivia night at your pub or restaurant, or even for your family reunion! Book a show today:
